Will Rogers once said, "Nothing you can't spell will ever work." The cowboy philosopher wasn't referring to the inner workings and hidden mechanisms of the political process. He was talking about the technological changes challenging society. Mass production of the automobile, polyvinyl-chloride, the cathode ray tube for television, and the electron microscope are a few of the developments under way in his heyday. Regarding the automobile, he said, "It will take a hundred years to tell whether you have helped us or hurt us, but you certainly didn't leave us like you found us."
