Society has always had a love-worry relationship with the tinkering of scientists and engineers. Medical advances and other technological marvels have buoyed the image of science and engineering from time to time but wrangling over key issues such as global warming has always raised doubts in the public's mind. Nowhere is this dichotomy more evident than in the debates surrounding the effect of chemicals on our health. We all deserve some serious compassion when it comes to the constant barrage of information that batters us daily. The media consistently tell us, in the most somber of tones, that yet another study indicates that something we eat, drink, or are otherwise exposed to causes some serious ailment.
