Ground Water Rule Compliance

There are more than 140,000 Public water Systems in the United States That USE Groundwater Serve Nearly 100 Million People. Public water Systems Using only Groundwater, Including Consecutive water Systems, are Required to Comply with new Regulations for Groundwater Systems Beginning December 1,2009. The Ground Water Rule (GWR) was published by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) on Nov. 8, 2006 (USEPA, 2006). The rule is intended to provide increased protection against bacterial and viral pathogens in public water systems using groundwater. A targeted approach is used to identify ground-water systems that are susceptible to fecal contamination. Groundwater systems at risk of microbial contamination are required to take corrective action to protect consumers. It is mandatory for public water systems that use groundwater to comply. This includes water systems that 1. rely on one or more groundwater sources for their water supply, 2. are consecutive systems receiving groundwater, or 3. mix surface water and groundwater where the groundwater is added directly to the distribution system (without surface water treatment).
