As Virginia begins developing plays outside the traditional seven counties in the commonwealth's southwest corner, members of the public unfamiliar with drilling activities are raising questions. Will Clear, chairman of the Virginia Oil & Gas Association's Public Relations Committee, says the association's efforts to calm those concerns through education and public relations are seeing success. "There is a little prospective Marcellus Shale in Virginia, and then there is another formation in northern Virginia that is getting some attention from one company that is leasing there," reports Clear, director of Southeast market development for Range Resources. "There are a lot of questions about those new areas. We are used to oil and gas here in southwestern Virginia, but when there is a newspaper article about someone obtaining leases in an area that doesn't have gas production, there are questions."
