With the race on to develop cleaner and greener power generation in the face of climate change, fuel cells are proving one of the more fruitful new technologies. Developments have now reached a stage where commercial viability is becoming more realistic. Though cells are used and produced on a fairly low scale, mass production is planned by some companies in Europe and the US, a move that should dramatically reduce production costs. The need now lies in the commercialisation and applications potential of fuel cells if they are to move to mainstream use.
