Hospital pharmacists'role in the prevention and management of respiratory syncytial virus

Pharmacists need to become more involved in the selection, initiation, modification, and monitoring of a patient's drug therapy on both an individual patient level and a more global level. Recognizing those infants and young children at risk for severe RSV infection, along with understanding and utilizing the strategies available to prevent and manage severe RSV disease, are crucial for decreasing associated morbidity and mortality. This information can also aid in the development of institutional protocols (e.g., pharmacy and therapeutics committee involvement, practice guidelines, and educational materials for health care providers rnand caregivers) for the management and prevention of RSV.
