The FDA Alliance, of which ASHP is a member, and the Coalition for a Stronger FDA merged at the beginning of the year to form the Alliance for a Stronger FDA. This new group has 10 honorary cochairs: three former Health and Human Services secretaries and seven former FDA commissioners. The goal of the merged group is to create a stronger FDA by securing for the agency a higher level of congressional funding than federal sources have allocated in recent years. William A. Zellmer, deputy executive vice president of ASHP, was a 2007 member of the board of directors of the FDA Alliance and will serve on the new organization's board as well.
