Valerie Valeriano and Christina Ong, co-owners of Queen of Hearts Couture Cakes in London, UK, made their first sunflower cupcakes in 2011, as Mother's Day gifts. Encouraged by the response this admittedly amateur effort received, the two became obsessed, practicing various piping techniques and trying out recipes over and over again. The results of this obsession have led to a successful business, teaching gigs around the world and now the release of their first book, The Contemporary Buttercream Bible, featuring examples and advice on creating buttercream-only cakes that look as modern and sophisticated as anything in fondant.
