摘要

CURRENT SCENARIO, 2009 As the baby boomer population has reached midlife in the United States, we are living in the midst of financial and moral crises, with a "healthcare" system that is the most expensive in the world - 20% of the US gross domestic product or $2.5 trillion annually - yet ranks 37th in caliber.1 More than 15% of the US population is without healthcare coverage.2 We have made incredible strides in our scientific understanding of the human body and the processes of disease; the uses of diagnostic labs, imaging, and procedures; the applications of surgical interventions; and the optimization of pharmaceutical products. Philosophies and practices include the transtheoretical model of behavioral change, motivational interviewing, nonviolent communication, appreciative inquiry, and other practices that are about activating clients to successfully achieve the life and health they want.
