Preliminary Validation of the Paradigm Developmental Model of Treatment Scale

The Paradigm Developmental Model of Treatment (PDMT) is an alcohol and other drug (AOD) treatment framework to guide counselor interventions. The purpose of this study was to validate a scale that measures where clients are in the PDMT. The scale, along with the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA), was completed by 203 multiple driving under the influence (DUI) offenders. Using a rotated component matrix, exploratory factor analysis indicated that the scale had 20 items that measured four factors, including a separate Alcoholics Anonymous participation factor. The scale demonstrated good internal consistency and concurrent validity with the URICA. Implications for use by DUI counselors are discussed.
