CONVAIR started as Consolidated Aircraft, founded in 1924 in Buffalo, New York. The company moved to San Diego in 1935, and is best remembered today for producing flying boats, including the PBY Catalina and, later, the B-24 Liberator bomber, the most-produced American military aircraft of all time (18,842 airframes). In 1943, the company merged with Vultee Aircraft of Los Angeles to form Consolidated-Vultee. That was soon shortened to Convair.
