CONVAIR'S SPEEDY JETLINERS

The jet engine revolutionised air travel and meant aircraft could travel further and faster than ever before. During the late 1950s, the market was dominated by two aircraft types, the Boeing 707, which entered revenue service with Pan Am in 1958, and the Douglas DC-8, which started commercial flights a year later with Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. Convair, also eager to break into the lucrative new market, came up with a design for a new jetliner that would not only compete with the DC-8 and the 707, it was also aimed at a niche market for highspeed luxury travel - the Convair 880.
