The formal merger of the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation and the Vultee Aircraft Corporation was approved on March 17,1943, creating Consolidated Vultee Aircraft, the name being unofficially abbreviated to Convair. Ten years later, on May 15,1953, technology conglomerate General Dynamics became the majority shareholder of Consolidated Vultee, and on April 30,1954, the name Convair became official when it became a division of General Dynamics.
