Spirit Airlines, Volotea and Wizz Air will be hoping pent-up leisure demand, coupled with VFR traffic, will sustain the launch of their new routes this summer. Airlines serving the transcontinental market between New York and Los Angeles (LAX) is clearly nothing new. It was fiercely competitive and premium-heavy before the pandemic, with O&D traffic of about 5.2 million passengers in 2019. Given United Airlines' return to New York John F. Kennedy (JFK), American Airlines' decision to bring back its high-end Airbus A321T, and JetBlue unveiling its upgraded A321 Mint product between JFK and LAX, things looks set to stay that way. But while carriers continue to battle for share at the top of the market, Spirit Airlines is going after a different kind of transcon passenger. From June 12, the Florida-based carrier will bring its ultra-low-cost fares to the sector, launching a 1X-weekly route between LaGuardia (LGA) and LAX.
