The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics was the nation's primary aeronautical research body before it became part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1958. When the NACA sought a fix for an airplane's design, it usually did it with hardware. For example, when the Lockheed P-38 Lightning encountered compressibility effects in high-speed dives, the NACA devised a dive brake—a hinged flap that swung down from the lower surface of the wing.
