Marine All-Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 121 (VMFA[AW]-121) 'Green Knights' turned in the last of its F/A-18D Hornet strike fighters on September 28 in preparation for temporary duty at Eglin AFB, Florida, as it begins transition to become the US Marine Corps' first F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter squadron. The squadron, until recently based at MCAS Miramar, California, is now based at MCAS Yuma, Arizona, and has been redesignated VMFA-121. It will receive its first F-35B, BF-19, from Lockheed Martin in late November. Yuma, home of Marine Aircraft Group 13 with approximately half of the Corps' AV-8B Harrier II attack force, will be the site of the USMC's first group of F-35B squadrons.
