Eurocopter has delivered the world's first helicopter to be equipped with a high-speed, realtime transmission system using earth-orbiting relay satellites. AS365N3 Dauphin 2 (JA02FD, c 6924) was handed over on March 28 to Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency and incorporates Mitsubishi Electric Corporation's Helicopter Satellite Communication System (HSA), which enables direct transmission to satellites without interruption from the helicopter's moving rotor blades, and relays data to ground receiving stations. Using the HSA's satellite relay, data can be provided from helicopters even when ground-based networks are interrupted, as well as in situations where line-of-sight broadcasts are hampered by mountains or tall buildings.
