F-15J IRST Upgrade

The Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) is planning to upgrade its Mitsubishi F-15J Eagle fighters with the indigenous J/AAQ-2 integral infrared search and tracking (IRST) system. It is capable of passively detecting targets - including stealthy aircraft - or those using electronic countermeasures that can disrupt radars. The sensor has been trialled on F-15J 12-8928 with the JASDF's test unit based at Gifu AB in the Gifu prefecture. Under the FY2013 Japanese defence budget, six F-15Js will be upgraded with a package that includes IRST capability.
