With its bush flying heritage and aircraft liveries, Alaska Airlines has a colourful reputation. A less welcome hue is the red that tinges its balance sheet. Most US airlines have been similarly afflicted since the start of the present decade, and like many of them the nation's ninth largest carrier has had to employ some drastic measures to try to return its finances to the black. These have included re-structuring, slashing pilots' salaries, and attempting to buy a way out of trouble by acquiring new aircraft in the hope of gaining substantial operating economies.
