A STRIKING recent announcement from Airbus proposes an aircraft with six removable engines. Looking unlike any other in-service commercial aircraft, the company is investigating the radical -looking 'pod' configuration as part of its ZEROe concept studies. Distributed fuel cell systems that deliver thrust from propulsors arranged along the wing is not a new concept, but Airbus' design is novel because it uses hydrogen fuel cells.
