AIR TRAFFIC controllers helped save more than 30,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO~2) in UK skies during the 2019/20 financial year, according to NATS. The UK's air navigation services provider cites improving airspace efficiency through measures such as more direct routings and smoother climbs and descents. In December the agency stated it has enabled fuel and CO~2 savings of an average 7% per flight since 2008. Ian Jopson, NATS head of sustainable operations, hailed the "further progress improving the environmental efficiency of our operation", but acknowledged that with the UK's net-zero carbon by 2050 target, "more demonstrable action is expected of us".
