Among the units of the Italian Air Force, 50° Stormo stands out because of a specialized role. Its 155° Gruppo 'Black Panthers', an Electronic Warfare Tactical Support and Suppression Squadron, is tasked with the SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defence) mission. SEAD is the military name given to the mission of attacking surface-to-air sites or 'SAM busting'. When 155° Gruppo retired the F-104S Starfighter and left 51° Stormo based at Istrana AB, it returned to the ranks of 6° Stormo to become the second Tornado IDS squadron based at Ghedi in 1984.
