Qantas A380 suffers the type's first major incident

On November 4, 2010, Qantas A380 VH-OQA (Nancy Bird-Walton, operating as flight QF32) suffered a massive and uncontained engine failure in the number two (port inner) Rolls-Royce Trent engine. The failure occurred as the aircraft climbed out from Singapore's Changi airport en route to Sydney. A380 VH-OQA took off at 0956, with 433 passengers and 26 crew members aboard, and suffered an engine failure about 15 minutes later, over Batam in Indonesia. Passengers heard an explosion, and debris tore through the wing less than 12 inches from the front wing spar, missing the fuel tanks. The A380's Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines are carefully positioned so that debris from a turbine disc failure will not penetrate the fuel tanks.
