LAN and TAM Seeking to Merge

On August 13 LAN of Chile and TAM of Brazil announced they had entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding to combine their holdings. The new proposed parent company, to be known as the LATAM Airlines Group, would be the largest carrier in South America, with revenue close to $8.5 billion (￡5.5 billion) and a fleet of approximately 250 aircraft, plus another 211 on order. LAN currently controls passenger airline affiliates in Argentina, Chile, Ecuadorrnand Peru and cargo carriers in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and the United States, while TAM has passenger operations in Brazil and Paraguay, plus a business aircraft concern in Brazil.
