No.II(Army Co-operation) Squadron assumed responsibility for the Tornado GR4 detachment based at Kandahar in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on April 13. The unit takes over from No.IX(Bomber) Squadron, which served three months in theatre providing close air support to British and coalition troops in the field and flying reconnaissance missions using the Litening 3 and RAPTOR pods. Thernunit accumulated over 1,600 flying hours during 450 sorties, including nearly 40 ground close air support missions in response to urgent calls for assistance from troops.
