The Vega Group, military electronic specialists, and aircraft manufacturer Beriev, are investigating the development of a tactical airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft based on a small passenger or transport type. Russian media has quoted Vega's Director General Vladimir Verba, as saying that the Antonov An-148 regional passenger aircraft produced at Voronezh would be used as the platform for the system. Another aircraft may also be chosen, as Beriev is proposing that the AEW system be installed on its Be-200 or Be-300 (a land-based variant).
