Col. Ralph S. Parr Jr., 1924-2012

Retired Col. Ralph Sherman Parr Jr., a Korean War double ace who was the only American pilot to receive both the Distinguished Service Cross and the Air Force Cross, died Dec. 7 in New Braunfels, Tex. Parr flew P-38 Lightnings in the Pacific during the last year of World War II and then entered the Reserve. Reactivated for the Korean conflict, he flew F-80s at the beginning of the war and F-86s at the end; in between, he worked developing aerial tactics. Redeployed to Korea for the last weeks of the war, he shot down 10 enemy aircraft in just 51 days, including the last aircraft shot down during the conflict, an 11-12 cargo airplane.
