On joining the Air Force Association as CyberPatriot's national commissioner in 2010, Bernard Kurt Skoch led a fledgling high school cyber defense competition that had attracted eight high school teams in its first year. Five years later, CyberPatriot had 2,175 teams from high schools and middle schools worldwide participating in its annual competition-with plans to expand into elementary schools and summer camps. Skoch was born in 1951 on Barksdale AFB, La., to parents Larry and Zita Skoch. He has one older brother, Philip. His father was an Air Force master sergeant whose assignments as a boom operator took the family to Morocco, France, and Alabama. As a boy, Skoch marveled over technology after listening to Sputnik in 1957 on his father's shortwave radio. "I was enchanted by all things space or science or technology," he said.
