Morocco loses seat on UNESCO's executive council, despite DG Audrey Azoulay's backing

To everyone's surprise, at the outcome of UNESCO'sgeneral conference on 17 November, Morocco failed towin a seat on the executive board, one of theinternational organisation's three governing bodies. Thedecision was all the more unexpected given thatMorocco was backed by UNESCO's director generalAudrey Azoulay, who also supported Jordan. Morever,when Morocco's permanent representative SamirAddahre announced his candidacy to the generalconference's 193 member countries in mid-October, heseemed confident about keeping the seat that he'dacquired in 2017.
