State-owned China North Industries Corp (Norinco) is currently negotiating with Secretary of State for Military Production, Afonso Carlos Neto, with a view to setting up assembly lines for 8x8 armoured vehicles in Angola. Norinco representatives recently spoke with Lieutenant General Mateus Manuel Gaspar, director of the national armament and technology agency, to assess the feasibility of the project that would be carried out in partnership with Simportex, a public company under the armed forces ministry. Simportex oversees most of the defence contracts negotiated between Luanda and foreign operators. It was involved in a project to set up a deal earlier this year for the Ukrainian firm AutoKrAZ to begin building trucks in Angola (Africa Intelligence, 05/03/21).
