A new police unit to prevent violence and gold trafficking is what the Sudanesegovernment has promised for the coming months, hoping to attract investors, butalso the support of international donors. At a ceremony held at Khartoum's CorinthiaHotel by the state-run Sudanese MineralResources Co (SMRC), Sudan's Minister ofFinance and the Economy, Hiba Mohamed Ali Ahmed, pledged to establish a police andarmy force as soon as possible to secure thecountry's mines. Her stated goal is both toprevent illegal entry of artisanal miners tothese sites and to curb the smuggling of goldout of the country. Though not directlyinvolved in this unit, unlike her mining andinterior counterparts, Hiba Mohamed AliAhmed's involvement is essential forKhartoum.
