Mongi Marzouk fights back at private renewable energy enterprise

Since taking back the helm of Tunisia's ministry of energy on 27 February, Mongi Marzouk has tried to undo the work of Youssef Chahed's administration in the renewable energy sector. As Africa Intelligence understands, Marzouk plans to strip the last decree signed by the former prime minister on 26 February of its core content with the introduction of two decrees of his own. The original piece of legislation defined the terms in which private companies are able to develop selfgenerated renewable energy projects and connect into the national grid operated by the state-run utility, the STEG (Société Tunisienne de l'Electricité et du Gaz). Many industrial players had been waiting on the legislation for years in order to able to create project companies, a prerequisite for carrying the heavy investments involved, or team up with specialised developers. As he cannot simply cancel the decree Marzouk is trying to make it impossible to apply by the introduction of the two decrees orders.
