As the shadows cast by the surrounding hills began to spread across the fringes of Wismar Bayin the Baltic on the serene sunlit evening of April 19, 1945, none of the sailors on the moored German ships could have imagined that they were about to witness a ferocious incident that remains in the record books 64 years later.
