As winston Churchill heralded the crucial battle to come in his speech to the House of Commons onrnJune 18, 1940, Britain stood completely alone. The German Blitzkrieg had swept rapidly through Poland, Denmark, Norway, Czechoslovakia, the Low Countries and France in quick succession. British forces had suffered the humiliating, if heroic, final withdrawal from France at Dunkirk earlier the same month.
