MEXICANS IN THE PHILIPPINES

Arriving in March 1945, Escuadron Aéreo de Pelea 201 (Fighter Squadron 201) of the Fuerza Aérea Mexicana flew P-47D-30-RAs on combat missions in the Philippines as a part of the AAF's 58th Fighter Group. It provided close air support to American ground units and long-range bombing strikes deep into Japanese-held territory. During five months of combat operations, the unit flew 795 combat sorties and lost seven pilots. Escuadron 201 was awarded the Philippine Presidential unit citation. It remains the only military unit in the history of Mexico to engage in combat outside of national borders.
