In 1933 Germany began to rearm. Under the I guise of sporting aviation, a large number of gliding schools with an effective youth programme were established alongside flying schools and clubs. This created a demand for A2'-type training aircraft, and from 1934 orders rolled in for the Fw 44 Stieglitz — German for goldfinch — among other types such as the Heinkel He 72 and Bucker Bu 131.
