In the early morning of 12 October 1967, a British European Airways de Havilland Comet 4B, G-ARCO, carrying 59 passengers and seven crew on flight CY284 from Athens to Nicosia crashed into the Mediterranean Sea between Rhodes and Cyprus, some 20nm south of the Turkish coast. A short time after a search and rescue operation began, wreckage and bodies were found a few miles back along the aircraft's track from its estimated position at the time of the truncated radio transmission. A few pieces of debris were recovered; in contrast, the bodies of all but 11 passengers, one steward and the three pilots were found. There were no survivors.
