Transition metal dichalcogenides MX_2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf, Mo, W, V, Nb, and Ta, X = S and Se) have a layered structure constructed by X-M-X atomic trilayer units, which are joined by strong covalent bonds. The large band-edge excitation of the d-d transition centered at a metal site gives rise to the unique electronic features and, therefore, results in numerous applications in catalysis, electrochemical intercalation, lithium-ion batteries, and superconductivity.
