The second edition of this textbook is geared toward library science graduate students who are interested in pursuing careers in academic librarianship. The book provides a detailed history of higher education in the United States (chapters 1-7), before ever discussing the details related to academic librarianship (chapters 8-14). As such, it encapsulates both the history and operations of both higher education as an institution and academic librarianship as a microcosm of that larger organization. Chapter 1 provides the contexts of higher education in relation to academic librarianship. Topics include the future of higher education and its libraries, student debt, the worth of a degree, funding challenges, socioeconomic gaps, and challenges for academic libraries. Chapter 2 presents the history of higher education, detailing all of its influences (Italian, French, English, German) and how these influences affected the growth of academic institutions from 1636 through World War Ⅱ. Chapter 3 explains academic faculty, from the three spokes of service, teaching, and research to tenure and diversity. Chapter 4 focuses on students, from recruitment to admissions, financial aid and retention, services and groups, collegiate sports, and graduation. Chapter 5 looks at academic curriculum, from general education and modification, to continuing and distance education. Chapter 6 examines governance, from federal/state to campus, who is involved and how it works. Chapter 7 details funding in higher education, from grants and research to endowments, the budget process, and income generation.
