Current CAD modeling techniques enable the design of objectsrnwith aesthetically pleasing smooth freeform surfaces. However,rnthe fabrication of these freeform shapes remains challenging. Ourrnnovel method uses orthogonal principal strips to fabricate objectsrnwhose boundary consists of freeform surfaces. This approachrnnot only lends an artistic touch to the appearance of objects, butrnalso provides directions for reinforcement, as the surface is mostlyrnbent along the lines of curvature. Moreover, it is unnecessaryrnto adjust the bending of these orthogonal strips during the constructionrnprocess, which automatically reforms the design shapernas if it is memorized, provided the strips possess bending rigidity.rnOur method relies on semi-isometric mapping, which preservesrnthe length of boundary curves, and approximates angles betweenrnboundary curves under local minimization. Applications includernthe fabrication of paper and sheet metal craft, and architecturalrnmodels using plastic plates. We applied our technique to severalrnfreeform objects to demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithms.
