Interchangeable components allow an object to be easily reconfigured,rnbut usually reveal that the object is composed of parts.rnIn this work, we present a computational approach for the designrnof components which are interchangeable, but also form objectsrnwith a coherent appearance which conceals their composition fromrnparts. These components allow a physical realization of AssemblyrnBased Modelling, a popular virtual modelling paradigm in whichrnnew models are constructed from the parts of existing ones. Givenrna collection of 3D models and a segmentation that specifies therncomponent connectivity, our approach generates the componentsrnby jointly deforming and partitioning the models. We determinernthe component boundaries by evolving a set of closed contours onrnthe input models to maximize the contours’ geometric similarity.rnNext, we efficiently deform the input models to enforce both C0rnand C1 continuity between components while minimizing deviationrnfrom their original appearance. The user can guide our deformationrnscheme to preserve desired features. We demonstrate our approachrnon several challenging examples, showing that our components canrnbe physically reconfigured to assemble a large variety of coherentrnshapes.
