The BlackBerry patent spat has highlighted the dangers of proprietary systems. How many organisations learn from the experience remains to be seen. For a while there it was touch and go: would Research In Motion and NTP reach a settlement or would America's 3.6m BlackBerry users have to go cold turkey? Then on 3 March, after years of wrangling, RIM agreed to pay NTP $612.5m (£351m) in 'full and final settlement of all claims' relating to their patent dispute (see box).
