I have just read the details of the Robert Half survey of salaries and job opportunities for chartered accountants. Quite frankly they must inhabit a parallel universe. I am an FCA, aged 54, and one of the fortunate to have full-time work and a reasonable income from it. The reality for large numbers of chartered accountants over the age of 40 is that if, for any reason, they fall off the corporate ladder there is no way back on. I believe that there is a perception that these are the failures and that 'good'people will soon be back in work. The reality is that this can and does happen to anybody and that there is a large pool of talent in the marketplace happy to take any half-way sensible job however far below their previous salary or experience level.
