Conscious of the fact the profession lacked any work-life support for female accountants at the height of Margaret Thatcher's reign in the 1980s, a group of women got together to create what was known as Women in Accountancy. But as time went on the group disappeared and eventually it transformed into Workplace 2000, leaving the women's agenda to get swallowed up into one of general workplace issues instead.rnThe career path of women in professional services has never been straightforward, and getting to a position of leadership, as history has highlighted, has always been rather a struggle for the female sex. Women at partnership level will still find they are sometimes the only woman in the room at events, but is the 21 st century slowly starting to see a change, and how close are we to equality in the accountancy world?
