A butcher has been sent to jail after being found guilty of spending £3.3m of taxpayers money on a lavish lifestyle of fast cars, expensive watches and Fender guitars. Gary Turner, 47, of Turner's Butchers began deceiving HMRC and his family in 1996 following a downturn in his business. Turner initially told HMRC that his accountant had the necessary paperwork for his VAT claims. He eventually confessed to fake invoices and false VAT repayment claims of up to £46,000. Turner was sentenced to five years in prison at Leeds Crown Court. Assets worth around £785,000 have already been restrained by HMRC with further confiscation proceedings underway.
