Business secretary Vince Cable has strongly criticised mining conglomerate Glencore Xstrata, the only remaining FTSE 100 company without female representation at board level, for failing to elect a woman to its senior management. Cable said it was 'simply not credible' that there was no suitably qualified candidate. At the May AGM, Glencore chairman Tony Hayward said it was 'an important ambition to appoint a female director before the end of this year.' However, in an interview on the same day with BBC Radio 4's Women's Hour programme, Cable said Glencore had been promising progress for too long and failing to deliver and its position was 'a bit of a disgrace'.
