In a swift move to clamp down on the manner in which individuals claim non-domiciled status to avoid paying domestic tax on their earnings, Chancellor George Osborne said this would be abolished, with the effect of raising £1.5bn. Inherited non-dom status - which has been in place since 1914 - is claimed by 116,000 individuals. 'Many of these people make a considerable contribution to our public life and to tax revenues. But there are some fundamental unfairnesses in the non-dom regime that I am putting a stop to,' the Chancellor said. 'It is not fair that people who are bom in the UK to parents who are domiciled here, can later in life claim to be non-doms and live here.'
