HMRC has kicked off a tax revolution with the introduction of the worryingly vague 'Simple Assessments', sparking the end of tax returns as we know them, or so the tax inspectors claim. Under the Making Tax Easier project (seriously, that's what they said) HMRC will use data it already squirrels away to calculate what tax is owed, by everyone. Simple right? Wrong. Worryingly, an HMRC webinar revealed that tax agents were struggling to get their heads around the new type of assessments; 63% to be precise had no idea what HMRC was talking about. Even when the system was thoroughly explained to them, 3% remained perplexed. HMRC making our jobs easier, who'd have thought?
