HMRC is to develop its own identity verification service for some taxpayers, rather than using the Gov.uk Verify online identity assurance service currently being developed by the Government Digital Service (GDS) as the standard ID platform for the public sector. The current Government Gateway service is set to be replaced by March 2018. This online login facility allows individuals, businesses and agents to use government services online by proving and authenticating their identity, and currently has more than 50m active accounts.
