The creative sector tax reliefs have been around for some time now. It is a tax benefit for a targeted set of industries but, as can be seen from the latest statistics released in August 2019, the government paid out over £1bn in 2018/19 alone – and nearly £5bn since being introduced. So, how do you find out more about these reliefs? The first relief – film tax relief – came into play in 2007. Since then, the government has extended this relief to include the production of video games, ‘high end’ TV programmes (eg, dramas, documentaries), animation and children’s programming. Relief may also be available for theatrical and orchestral productions. Finally, from April 2017, relief was made available for producing museum and gallery exhibitions.
